Laufenburg, 10 April 2025 – FlexBase Group has received construction approval for the Technology Center Laufenburg (TZL), which will house the world’s largest battery storage facility and a high-performance data center for artificial intelligence (AI). The official groundbreaking ceremony will take place in the coming weeks. Full commissioning is scheduled for summer 2028.

A Visionary Project and Essential for Our Energy Future

Marcel Aumer, Group CEO, Chairman of the Board, and Co-Founder of FlexBase, emphasizes: “The construction approval enables the realization of a visionary project with which we will sustainably secure the energy supply of tomorrow – The Power of Innovation for Tomorrow’s World.”

The TZL will be built at the “Star of Laufenburg,” Central Europe’s electricity hub with 41 cross-border transmission lines. Through its direct connection to the European power grid, the efficiency of the facility will be maximized.

World’s Largest Redox Flow Battery Storage System

Covering an area of more than 20,000 m², the world’s largest and most advanced redox flow battery storage system is being built, with a total capacity of more than 1.6 GWh and an output of over 800 MW. The energy storage medium is a liquid consisting of 75% water, supplemented by 25% of a metallic electrolyte (typically vanadium or bromine). This composition ensures that the battery is neither flammable nor explosive. “With our battery storage system, we are actively driving Switzerland’s energy transition and laying the foundation for an efficient energy future in Europe,” said Group CEO Marcel Aumer.

AI Data Center and District Heating Supply

The AI data center combines cutting-edge technology with the highest security standards and uses innovative water-cooling systems. The waste heat generated by the data center is fed into a district heating network that supplies Laufenburg and surrounding municipalities within a radius of several dozen kilometers, as well as industrial facilities with increased heat demand. In the future, Laufenburg’s old town is to be supplied with district heating from the existing data centers in the FlexBase operations building, which alone could save around 75,000 tons of CO₂ in Laufenburg over the next 30 years.

A Win-Win for the Region and Beyond National Borders

With this project, FlexBase will create around 300 to 350 new jobs. “Our project is a classic win-win, delivering pioneering solutions for the energy transition and a reliable power supply,” said Marcel Aumer. “It strengthens the regional economy, creates jobs, and provides district heating—even across the border into Germany.”
