Laufenburg, 5 May 2025 – Following the granting of construction approval and the groundbreaking ceremony for the Technology Center Laufenburg (TZL) of FlexBase Group, Sergio Baumann—former project manager of the new cantonal hospital building in Aarau (KSA)—has assumed overall project management of the landmark project in the Fricktal region. Following the groundbreaking on 5 May 2025, commissioning of the TZL is scheduled for 2028.
Baumann’s extensive experience with large-scale infrastructure projects and his strong understanding of sustainable development and innovation are key to ensuring the long-term success of the TZL and to establishing Laufenburg as a significant hub for technology and research. Covering an area of more than 20,000 m², the world’s largest and most advanced battery storage facility is being built, with a capacity of more than 1.6 GWh and an output of over 800 MW. An AI data center will be integrated into the technology center, combining cutting-edge technology with the highest security standards, utilizing innovative water-cooling systems and, among other things, supplying district heating to Laufenburg’s old town.
Extensive Experience with Complex Construction Projects
With many years of leadership experience in construction, management, and operation of major infrastructure projects, Baumann is the ideal choice for this forward-looking initiative. “We are delighted to have secured Sergio Baumann, an experienced, dynamic, and exceptionally well-connected manager, for our project,” said Marcel Aumer, Group CEO, Chairman of the Board, and Co-Founder of FlexBase.
Sergio Baumann looks back on more than 11 years of successful service at Kantonsspital Aarau (KSA), where he most recently served as Head of the Operations Department and member of the executive management. In this role, he was responsible, among other things, for delivering the generational project “Dreiklang,” one of the largest hospital construction projects in Switzerland. In addition, he successfully initiated and managed various modernization projects in the areas of medical infrastructure, energy supply, and digitalization.
Committed to the Canton of Aargau and Full of Energy
Sergio Baumann commented: “It is a privilege and a great pleasure, after a successful period at KSA, to now be involved in another major and demanding project in the canton of Aargau. I still have a great deal of energy and am ready to take on this project of the century and help realize a flagship initiative for the European energy sector.”
From May 2025 onward, Baumann will lead the construction of the TZL as overall project manager, overseeing the development adjacent to the former—and now revitalized—Swissgrid building. His leadership experience in construction, management, and operation of large infrastructure projects will help optimize collaboration among all stakeholders—spatial planners, architects, engineers, construction specialists, and authorities—so that by 2028, a flagship project featuring state-of-the-art technologies in information technology, communications, and energy can be brought into operation in Laufenburg.
